What exactly is a U-Boat watch? Many people associate the term U-Boat with a German submarine one WWII. Although the term was used to refer to German subs of the age, the U-Boat watch is an Italian creation. Around 1942 the Italian Navy commissioned Italo Fontana, a well-known watchmaker, to create a watch for their naval officers. It had to be functional in a battle situation and impervious to salt water. At the same time it had to be stylish, a point of pride for ship captains, high-ranking officers and other important officials. His design was such a success that it inspired a whole style of watches.
Today’s U-Boat watches are very different but still serve the two main purposes of looking good and preforming well under extreme nautical situations.
